ASX open habits that protect the morning plan

The first half-hour after the Australian cash open can erase a carefully written setup. A few desk rules we teach for local session traders.

Local equity traders often prepare beautiful evening plans, then abandon them in the auction scramble. Our intensive spends time on open etiquette because risk-managed trade setup planning fails most often in the first trades of the day.

Desk rules that travel well

  • If the open gaps beyond your invalidation, the overnight idea is finished — do not “hope for a fill.”
  • Avoid adding a second ticker before the first planned setup has either triggered or been cancelled.
  • Write the maximum number of morning attempts (often one) on the sheet, not in your head.

Why location still matters

Trading from regional Victoria does not change ASX microstructure, but it does change interruption patterns. Clients who step away from household traffic for the opening window report fewer impulse tickets — a mundane edge, and a real one.

If you want help turning these habits into a personal playbook, start with the Risk-Managed Setup Intensive.
